This handbook introduces two approaches to the subject area of the 'city'. For one thing, all disciplines involved in urban studies – from architecture over history, geography, political sciences and law up to current urban sociology and urban ethnology – have their say. An overview chapter elucidates the multidisciplinary parallels and differences of urban studies. The second approach leads up to an outline from the vantage point of cultural studies that is based on specialist research relevant to the subject matter at hand. Cities are recognized as cultural spaces and presented in their composition. Individual consideration is given to topics such as the image of the city, the city as a stage, the city as physical and social environment, city and literature, city and religion, as well as urban memory.
