1. Why did you choose this topic?

Both in my own studies and during my work at a design university, I noticed that design tools are rarely reflected upon theoretically. Designers frequently rely on standardized tools without questioning their impact on their work. At the same time, a very high priority is assigned to these tools. In practice, this goes so far that designers often qualify themselves for jobs through software skills. This observation motivated me to explore this topic more deeply.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

The research revealed that not only design tools, but tools in general are not a particularly well-researched topic. Surprisingly, even the philosophy of technology does not have much to say about them. Thus, to get to grips with the topic, in addition to summarizing the loose discourses in the field, the book takes a practical approach: it develops a method that allows designers to use their practical skills to analyze tools and to study their effects.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

The current debates on how AI tools are transforming design practice make it sound as if the dependence on technologies was something new for designers. By showing how the design practice has always been fundamentally shaped by the interplay with its tools, the book offers a valuable foundation for reflecting on how technologies have always transformed design processes. Thus, it allows for a more reflective approach to design tools as well as conducting such discussions with greater clarity.
