This book re-imagines responsible leadership through Ubuntu ethics. It anchors responsibility as a foundational moral category in Ubuntu thinking. It shows how this theory can be applied to the Sustainable Development Goals. In doing so, it demonstrates the profound practical contribution African philosophy can make to humanity’s most urgent contemporary challenges.

The book develops a systematic Ubuntu moral anthropology, grounding human dignity in the capacity for empathy. It then shows how genuine, responsible leadership emerges from the convergence of Ubuntu and a threefold responsibility. Ubuntu is understood here as both an empathic capacity and a cultivated virtue. The threefold responsibility involves recognising umuntu (human dignity), realising oneself through moral self-cultivation, and building community. The book argues that contemporary leadership failures stem from three gaps: the absence of a robust moral anthropology, the neglect of responsibility as a foundational moral category, and the individualisation of leadership and ethics. It then applies this framework in two ways. First, to management education, through the UN Principles for Responsible Management Education. Second, to four Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education, Gender Equality, Reduced Inequalities, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

This book offers an important alternative to prevailing Euro-American leadership frameworks. It will be essential reading for researchers across business, education, sustainable development, philosophy, and African studies.
