Originally published in 1959 and beautifully illustrated with 60 colour photographs and 30 drawings, this volume concentrates on the striking architecture and sculpture of the Hindu-Javanese period as well as other forms of art including drama, dance, music and literature. The organization of the work is broadly chronological but when desirable to deal with the material typologically, the author does so. Wagner is thus able to reinforce his theme of the continuity of various aspects of Indonesian art and culture throughout the ages. Both illustrations and text are closely integrated.
