As any collection of interwoven facts necessarily omits other facts, so at the feet of every victorious story lies the corpse of the story it defeated. This book seeks to recover, from within well-known narratives, the negative from which they were produced and to turn it into narrative form. In doing so, it consciously explores the possibility of raising to life stories that were never fully born. This is a literary operation that takes place within the imagination of the reader rather than a reconstruction of historical reality as such. Its significance lies not in the factual status of the reconstructed narratives but in the awareness it fosters—on the part of the reader, the historian, and the interpreter—of what has been silenced in the act of storytelling itself. The book proposes a subversive reading of several foundational narratives from the holy scriptures of the three so-called “Abrahamic” religions—the Torah, the New Testament, and the Quran—as well as of other canonical stories. This reading does not aim to diminish the authority or cultural power of these texts, nor to silence the voices that speak through them. Rather, it seeks to create an interpretive framework in which suppressed or marginalized voices can be articulated, without adjudicating the ultimate validity or superiority of any single voice. The reconstruction of muted stories is presented here as a literary and intellectual exercise recommended to every consumer of data, and especially to historians trained to rely on verified documents and established facts. The book argues that historical understanding requires imagination no less than archives. It discusses ten case studies, two of which demonstrate that what began as literary imagination was later confirmed as historical reality.
